Safe Gap Year & Burma

At Safe Gap Year our personal experience demonstrates how independent travel can change the lives of participants through the perspective it gives us.

This is often best demonstrated by the work or volunteering undertaken and encounters with local people leading to life-long commitments to projects and charities around the world.

Gap Years

Gap years are not just for the young and they don’t have to take a whole year… so really the term ‘Gap Year’ is a little outdated.

So what does it all mean?

Tourism is one of the world’s biggest industries, worth hundreds of billions of dollars worldwide.

Returning Home - Reverse Culture Shock

If you are in the process of planning a gap year or independent travel, returning home is probably the last thing on your mind and yet it is likely to be one of the harder parts of your journey. Whatever your age and experience, you are likely to find coming home a challenging time.

Reverse culture shock is the experience of returning to something that was once familiar but which now seems different.

The impact of ‘culture shock’ can be devastating and ruin even the best planned trip; but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Too many people save up for years, plan for months and build up the excitement  leading up to a gap year, volunteering project or independent travel only to be confronted with the harsh realities on arrival; they find the cultural and environmental differences are so great they can’t cope and abandon their trip.
