Career Breaks

The number of people choosing to take a career break is growing every year. This is great news for everyone as the more people who take a career break the more acceptable it becomes to employers and the smaller the ‘impact’ it has on future career opportunities.

The situation has now progressed to the point where some employers have chosen to introduce career break schemes into their employment policies. Companies such as Tesco, The Post Office, British Telecom and Vodafone have all seen the value in individuals who decide to take time out from their careers and the advantage in retaining employees through these schemes; allowing employees to recharge their batteries, explore new opportunities and realise their dreams, enhances the work / life balance.

Career breaks can be spent travelling or living in a new part of the world or be combined with working / volunteering in another country, the opportunities are endless; working a ski season in the Alps, building a school in Bolivia, looking after orphaned elephants in Sri Lanka… the world is truly your oyster.

The new skills you learn may sometimes seem rudimentary, for example building schools in a developing country may at first seem only to help improve your DIY skills; yet the ‘hidden’ skills you will learn that are substantially more valuable.

Building a school in a developing country will mean you have to work and deal with people from vastly different cultures, who have a very different work ethic. Learning not only to communicate effectively, but also to work alongside a diverse group of people, is a skill that employers will welcome when you return.

Working abroad will teach you to overcome challenges which you simply do not face in your everyday life. Not only does this allow you to develop problem solving skills, it can also be unbelievably rewarding. Stories about individuals with successful lucrative jobs, taking a career break to build a school in a developing country who return and retrain as a teacher, are certainly not unique.

Whatever you decide to undertake during your career break, preparing for the change your life is about to take, allows you not only to enjoy your time more confidently, but also to make the transition to your new environment a smooth and positive experience from the start.

Our Independent Travel Safety & Cultural Awareness Workshop will help you plan effectively for your travel and the challenges you will face, to help you make the most of this unique opportunity.
